HRH Eze Dr. Ken Osoundu Nwala, JP, DSSRS; UGO 1 OF ETCHELAND
There are men who chase titles, and there are titles that pursue men. In Etcheland, when a man is called UGO, it is the latter that has happened. The crown did not look for a head; the head grew to fit the crown.
The Deep Meaning of Ugo
In Etche, Ugo is more than the Eagle in the sky. It is a living metaphor.
Ugo is Glory that does not fade - a fire that does not need kerosene.
Ugo is Height that cannot be reduced - you cannot use a short ladder to bring down a mountain.
Ugo is Peace and Guardianship. While other birds sleep with both eyes closed, the Eagle sleeps with one eye open, watching over the forest.
Etche does not confer Ugo on a man because his pocket is heavy. Etche confers Ugo because the man himself has become heavy with honour - a walking proverb, a living mirror of the land's dignity. Funny enough, in a world where many buy honour like wrappers in the market, his was ironically tailored without his own measurement. The crown of Ugo is not sewn with thread; it is forged in character, like gold tested in fire.
That is why the whispers of nature around Eze Dr. Ken Nwala have grown louder, like drums heard before the dancers appear.
A Destiny Prepared From The Womb
Our elders say: By the flight of the chick, you know the eagle.
Long before the world took notice, nature was already moulding him behind the scenes. He did not study Etche tradition from a distance like a visitor reading a map; he drank it from the source, like a son who grew up in his father's compound and knows every corner without being told.
A devoted student of the revered Etche stool, he is grounded in the fullness of our custom, culture, and native wisdom. He knows the proverb, and he knows when silence speaks louder than a thousand words. He carries the old wisdom in a new bottle.
His life already carries royalty, without making noise about it:
As JP, he is a bridge over troubled waters, standing for peace and justice in a noisy world.
As DSSRS, Rivers State has stamped it - distinction and humility can indeed live under one roof.
As Dr., he proves that tradition without knowledge is like a car without an engine - it looks good but goes nowhere.
As Onye-Ishi Agwuru, his people have placed their sacred trust in him. To them, he is not just a leader; he is their head, their voice, and their shield - the umbrella that does not leak when it rains.
What is grooming, if not this? What is preparation, if not a man who climbed the ladder of service rung by rung, without jumping the queue? Ironically, while others were looking for shortcuts, he was busy building the long road.
Reserved For Greater Assignment
Nature does not bake bread and throw it away. Nature does not prepare a vessel and abandon it. Nature grooms, refines, and reserves such a man for greater assignment. The potter does not mould a fine pot to keep it in the backyard.
The eagle was never made for the low branch. The low branch is too small for its wings and too weak for its weight. It was made for the tallest Iroko, where the whole land can look up and find direction, where its shadow alone gives confidence.
Eze Dr. Ken Nwala has borne the honour of a great Etche with dignity. His shoulders have been tested and did not bend. His wisdom has been weighed and did not fall short.
He did not give himself the name Ugo. Etcheland gave it to him because Etcheland saw tomorrow in his today. Ironically, he who never blew his own trumpet is the one the whole village is now drumming for.
And tomorrow is no longer tomorrow; tomorrow is speaking today.
UGO 1 OF ETCHELAND - Ebube Etche! The Eagle whose flight has only just begun, and the sky is already making way.
