There are growing calls in Rivers State for Otutochi Wigwe to invest the proceeds from her late father's luxury superyacht in Wigwe University, Isiokpo.
The 33-metre yacht, Chitochi, reportedly sold for $6.5 million (about N9.7 billion) through international brokerage IYC after its BVI holding company was restored by court order, is said to be one of the assets left behind by the late Access Holdings GCEO, Herbert Wigwe.
Reacting to the sale, a stakeholder in Isiokpo, Mr. Chris Ohochukwu, said bringing the money home to Isiokpo would immortalize the late billionaire.
"The yacht is gone and we understand the business decision. But that money should not end in the sea. It should come home to Isiokpo. If that $6.5m is invested in Wigwe University, it will go a long way — hostels, laboratories, scholarships for Rivers children. That is the legacy Herbert Wigwe wanted," Ohochukwu said.
Wigwe University, founded by the late banker who died in a helicopter crash on February 9, 2024, alongside his wife and son, commenced academic activities in 2024 and recently held its second matriculation for 173 students.
At press time, the Wigwe estate has not disclosed how the proceeds from the yacht sale will be utilized.
